Yet another game came down to free throws for Austin, but it was a charge drawn by the Caledonia defense that allowed them to come away with a 54-53 victory in the 29th Annual Lewiston Auto Warrior Club Tournament at McCown Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Colton Lampert, playing in just his second game this season, got in position in front of Zach Coffey to get the charge call shortly after Austin’s Nik Gasner drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 52-50 Caledonia lead with 1:09 to play.
Both Gach attempted to miss a third free throw attempt with less than a second remaining, but it banked in and Caledonia was able to secure the win.
Caledonia (8-1), ranked third in the MSHSL 1AA state poll, didn’t score until nearly seven minutes into the opening half and trailed 11-0, but used the final eleven minutes of the first to its advantage, taking a 33-22 lead into the locker room.
Austin Bauer and Owen King both scored 15 points for Caledonia, while Gach Gach had another outstanding game, finishing with 23 for Austin (5-6).
